Why go

In 1821 the Sultan of Morocco gave the young United States a building in the medina of Tangier. It served as a diplomatic mission for well over a century and is today the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies: a museum, a research library and a cultural centre. It describes itself as the only U.S. National Historic Landmark located overseas.

Inside, rooms and courtyards hold exhibitions on Tangier’s history and on the long friendship between the two countries, as well as paintings, maps and photographs. It is a quiet, rewarding stop on a walk through the lower medina.

What to expect

A small museum spread over several floors and courtyards, with stairs. The official website lists opening hours of 10 am to 5 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 3 pm at weekends (checked October 2026).

Our advice

  • Find it on Rue d’Amérique in the lower medina, close to the Grand Socco.
  • The official website has a virtual tour if you want to preview the rooms.
  • Check the website for temporary exhibitions and events.

Advice from our editors, not official rules: check opening times and conditions locally.
