Medina · Food · Festivals
Morocco’s red city at the foot of the High Atlas: a UNESCO-listed medina, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, gardens and a busy calendar of festivals.
Founded by the Almoravids in the 11th century, Marrakech grew around its medina, listed by UNESCO since 1985. Its heart is Jemaa el-Fnaa, a square of storytellers, musicians and food stalls that UNESCO recognises as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage. The Koutoubia minaret rises just beside it.
Beyond the souks, the city opens onto palaces, riads and gardens, with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon in winter. Marrakech is also one of the country’s busiest event cities, which makes it a natural base for planning a trip around a festival or a sports weekend.
