Watch Marrakech’s great square change shift at dusk: storytellers and musicians gather, smoke rises from the food stalls and the whole city seems to meet there.

  • AllowAbout 3 h
  • Best timeFrom about an hour before sunset into the evening, any time of year; evenings are cooler and busier from autumn to spring.

Why go

Jemaa el-Fnaa is not a monument you tick off but a space you spend time in. UNESCO recognises the square as a cultural space of intangible heritage: a place where storytellers, poets, Gnaoua dancers and musicians have performed for centuries, alongside herbalists, henna artists and juice sellers.

The square works all day, but it is at its most remarkable as the light goes. In the late afternoon the open ground fills with rows of food stalls, lamps come on and circles of listeners form around performers. Arriving before sunset lets you see the transformation happen rather than walking into it fully formed.

The Koutoubia minaret, the symbol of the city in UNESCO’s description of the medina, stands a few minutes’ walk away and frames the view to the west.

What to expect

Crowds, noise and a lot of movement, especially in the evening. Food stalls are numbered and set up in rows; prices are usually shown on a board at each stall. Performers and photographers will expect a tip if you watch or take pictures of them.

Our advice

  • Agree on a price before you sit down to eat or before you are photographed with a performer.
  • Keep valuables in a front pocket or a zipped bag: it gets very busy.
  • Café terraces around the square give a view from above if you want a break from the crowd.
  • Animal acts (snakes, monkeys) are part of the scene; many visitors prefer not to pay for photos with them.
