White houses and rooftop terraces of the Tangier medina in bright sun

Around Tangier

Strait views · Medina · Two seas

A port city on the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean: a whitewashed medina and kasbah, sea views to Spain and a long literary history.

Photo: Maged

Tangier looks across the Strait of Gibraltar to the coast of Spain, a few kilometres away. Its medina climbs to the kasbah, from where the views take in the bay and the strait. In the 20th century the city attracted writers and artists from around the world, and its cafés and old cinemas still carry that memory.

West of the centre, Cap Spartel marks the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the Caves of Hercules lie on the coast nearby. High-speed trains connect Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca.
