The dye pits of the Chouara tannery among the old houses of the Fes medina

Around Fez

Medieval medina · Crafts · Learning

One of the oldest imperial cities of Morocco: the vast UNESCO-listed medina of Fes el-Bali, the al-Qarawiyyin, master craftsmen and the dye pits of the tanneries.

Fes el-Bali, the old walled city, is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1981. Within its lanes stands al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often described as one of the oldest continuously operating universities.

Crafts still shape daily life: brass, wood, ceramics and leather, with the Chouara tannery and its colourful dye pits as the best-known sight. Fes rewards slow visits and a good guide, and its cultural festivals give a reason to time a trip.
