Around Essaouira
Atlantic port · Music · Wind
A walled Atlantic port with a UNESCO-listed medina, blue fishing boats, steady trade winds and a strong musical tradition, from Gnawa to world music.
Known in the past as Mogador, Essaouira was laid out in the 18th century as a fortified port, and its medina has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001. The ramparts, the fishing harbour with its blue boats and the long beach set the rhythm of the town.
The constant wind makes the bay a well-known spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the town is closely associated with Gnawa music and its festival. Essaouira is a quieter alternative to Marrakech, a few hours away by road.
