Por qué ir
Volubilis was founded in the 3rd century BC as a capital of the kingdom of Mauretania and became an important outpost of the Roman Empire. It was later, briefly, the capital of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who is buried in nearby Moulay Idriss. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1997.
What makes the visit memorable is that many mosaic floors remain in the houses where they were laid, showing mythological scenes. The basilica, the capitol and a triumphal arch stand on a plain of olive groves below the hills, about 30 km from Meknes.
Qué esperar
A large, open site with little shade, on mostly flat ground with some rough paths. Allow two to three hours to walk the main streets and houses. Entry is paid.
Nuestros consejos
- Bring water, a hat and sun protection: there is almost no shade.
- Combine it with Moulay Idriss Zerhoun nearby and Meknes the same day.
- Late afternoon light is beautiful on the arches, but check closing time locally.
