Walk an 18th-century fortified port town planned by a French engineer, from the sea ramparts to the harbour full of blue boats.

  • أفضل وقتYear-round; the town stays mild in summer thanks to the wind.

لماذا تذهب

The present town of Essaouira dates from 1765, when Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah decided to build a port to open Morocco to world trade, and brought in the French engineer Théodore Cornut to design it. UNESCO, which listed the medina in 2001, calls it an outstanding and well-preserved example of a late 18th-century European fortified seaport adapted to a North African setting.

The walk is simple and rewarding: along the sea ramparts and their cannons, through the straight streets of the medina, then out to the port, where the fishing fleet of blue boats comes and goes and the morning catch is sold on the quay.

ماذا تتوقع

A relaxed, walkable town, often windy. The port is a working harbour: watch your step around ropes and nets. Grilled fish stalls near the port cook the catch to order.

نصائحنا

  • Bring a layer: the Atlantic wind can be cool even in summer.
  • Go to the port in the morning to see the boats come in.
  • The ramparts are lovely at sunset; the beach to the south is good for long walks.
